A short guide to occasions: which flowers are fitting, and which are best saved for another time.

A first date

A compact bouquet of pink or cream roses, ranunculus or lisianthus. It shows thoughtfulness without creating an awkward moment: a bouquet like this is easy to carry all evening.

Milestone birthdays and celebrations

A large arrangement in a box or vase spares the recipient any fuss in the midst of the celebration. Good form is to have the flowers delivered in advance, before the event begins, with a handwritten card.

An apology

Loud accents have no place here. White and pale green flowers, hydrangea and lisianthus speak of calm and sincerity. Add a short card: a few honest words carry more weight than a long letter.

Colleagues and partners

Prestigious, restrained choices: white roses in a lacquered box, an orchid in a planter or an architectural arrangement of calla lilies. They look right in an office and need no care.
